Rainy Roof

How Weather Affects Your Roof

Your roof is your home’s first line of defense against inclement weather, and it certainly takes a beating over time. Harsh weather conditions can wear down the integrity of your roof, causing it to deteriorate it specific ways, depending on what kind of weather exposure it faced. If you’re interested in learning more about the ways in which various weather conditions can damage your roof, keep reading below!

Rain

Arguably the most damaging weather condition for your home, rain isn’t a major concern, unless you have a roof leak. However, the issue with rain is that you often don’t know whether your roof is leaking until it’s too late, because it can notoriously hard to spot roof leaks with an untrained eye. By the time you have visual cues in your home that your roof is leaking, such as water spots on your ceiling, the damage has been done. If you’re interested in in protecting your home from rain, have your roof inspected at least once a year, preferably after the winter, to ensure that it is still in good condition!

Snow

Another damaging weather condition that effects New Jersey homeowners in snow. However, it’s not from the weight on the snow sitting on your roof, it is from the ice dams that form as a result.

Ice dams are created when warm air escapes through your roof, heating the snow on your shingles and causing it to melt and run down your roof. Once it reaches the edge of your roof, it refreezes in your gutter system, and this process occurs repeatedly until the melted snow is held onto your roof, rather than refreezing. This quickly leads to water seeping in around your shingles and causing damage just as rain would!

Wind

Another damaging weather condition, particularly on the sea coast, is wind. While most shingles are now fitted with additional adhesives to be installed at the edges of the roof, a strong gust of wind still has the potential to lift shingles and cause damage. While there isn’t much to be done about wind damage beyond making sure you work with a quality contractor like Amiano & Son for your roof replacement, if there was a major windstorm that hit your home, have a roof inspector come to examine the integrity of the roof and determine if any damage occured!
